Evershed's Rooftop Vegetable Garden, EC2, London
The award winning Evershed Sutherland rooftop garden sits on top of an environmentally award winning building. The garden's rooftop floor was initially planted with sedum and wild flowers to attract nature and create for them a tranquil haven in the city.
Two employees of the Law Firm, Marta and Julie, began to grow herbs in a sheltered corner of the rooftop. Things quickly escalated and the pair have grown the garden in their lunchtime and after work to a blossoming space, growing a variety of fruit, vegetables and flowers. The garden is really a credit to their hard work and they have won a number of awards including Most Innovative in Design Award, City in Bloom 2014 and the Outstanding Food Growing, Commercial, City in Bloom 2015.
As well as the vegetable garden, the rooftop is also home to beehives and employees of the company also maintain this in their free time as well as producing their own honey!
We loved the tranquil environment that had been created in the middle of the city, the views were also breathtaking and it was great to see the city from another viewpoint that isn't usually open to the public. Being able to visit these hidden gem gardens was our favourite part of the Open Gardens weekend, it is amazing to see the time and effort going into urban gardening across the city.
